// The Fondation – work and aims

Since its creation in 1990, the foundation’s aim has been to represent the variety of people persecuted by Nazi Germany. The constitution of its executive committee reflects these varieties as it contains former deportees of the two branches of deportation victims:

  • Victims of repression: people who resisted, opposed or fought against the ideology of the 3rd Reich (communists, unionists, resistant fighters…)
  • Victims of persecution: people who were persecuted because of their origin or religious background (Jewish, gipsy…)

The foundation has dedicated itself to support former deportees and their families as well as to keep alive the memories of the cruel period between 1940 and 1945.

You find below a short overview of the deportation in France:

88.000 as a result of repression :
– people accused (or supposed) by the Nazi-government to be a danger
-> 60 % returnees
76.000 as a result of anti-Semitic persecution :
(including 11.000 children)
-> 3 % returnees

The total amount of people deported: about 165.000 people

The Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Déportation is recognized as an organisation of public benefit.
